When teaching for creativity, embedding multimedia tools into learning content may prove highly effective. Research suggests that using multimedia technologies can enhance student creative performance by (a) equipping students with similar skills needed for creative thinking such as self-directed learning, (b) offering students interactive and exciting learning experiences conducive to creative processes (Liu et al., 2022, p. 8620). Therefore, teachers should consider including multimedia applications in their creative lessons for desirable learning outcomes. This blog post suggests a promising multimedia program for such classroom teaching: Apple Clips.
What is Apple Clips?
Apple Clips is a video creation program for Apple mobile devices, including iPhone and iPad (Apple Inc., 2023) that goes beyond popular video editing softwares such as Adobe Premiere and iMovie in terms of user-friendly interface. Instead of adding effects after the video has been filmed, Apple Clips allows students to include effects before filming and observe effects as the video is being filmed. The app also offers many desirable functions for video editing, including augmented reality effects, video lighting adjustments, stickers, texts, and many more functions included in other video editors (Apple Inc., 2023).

Why Apple Clips for Creative Learning?
Apple Clips’ functions clearly demonstrate the two capabilities of a multimedia technology in fostering creative performance mentioned above. The app can both support self-directed learning and create interactive/exciting learning environments (proven to enhance student creativity) through its easy-to-use functions and diverse video editing options.
Since creativity involves producing outcomes (Paston et al., 2021), Apple Clips’ best role in the classroom is serving as a production tool for students’ unique interpretation of their learning. Teachers can design creative lessons using Apple Clips by tasking students with describing learning concepts/demonstrating learning capabilities in their own ways using the app. An example of such learning activities is having students showcasing their literacy skills by describing their rooms, as shown in the video below.

Teaching Precautions for Apple Clips
Though Apple Clips present itself as an accessible outlet for creative production, it actually remains inaccessible to many students, specifically those without Apple mobile devices. The app also has a shortcoming of having limited functions for editing videos post-production.
